FSSAI License
Food Safety & Standards Act 2006 was brought into implementation to improve the quality and hygiene methods in the food industry. This Act enforces that any entity to start food business has to be registered under FSSAI, furthermore any food manufacturing or packaging, distribution and transportation must obtain a FSSAI registration or license.
There are two categories under FSSAI license, one being the state level and other central level licenses. All hotels, restaurants and mid size food manufacturers come under the state level license and bigger food manufacturer come under central level licensing.
Each location of a food manufacturer or distributor have to obtain a FSSAI license , therefore every establishment that has multiple locations must obtain multiple FSSAI licenses for every location it operates from. FSSAI are valid for one or two years , it has to be renewed before the expiration of the license previously obtained.
A category for hawkers, temporary stall owners, small food business operators small scale cottage industries and migrant vendors are exempted from obtaining a FSSAI license or registration.
